MFRS: Arabic Speaking Male Settlement Support Broker Opportunity



MFRS is a charitable organization in Edmonton that provides programming for immigrant and refugee families and youth to enhance their skills, knowledge, and confidence for social integration. In the last 12 years, we have provided supports and programs to over 20,000 newcomers in Edmonton. As migration to Edmonton continues to increase, so does the demand for our services using our unique Nested Service Delivery Model and Cultural Brokering approach. We are looking for someone who understands the needs of newcomers and have the knowledge of community resources that will support long-term integration of immigrant and refugees.

POSITION SUMMARY: Within the broad guidelines of Settlement Program (SP) funded by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the Settlement Support Cultural Broker will provide holistic one-on-one family support to clients seeking services from MFRS on settlement issues, assess their needs and offer information, referral and advocacy services on behalf of the clients. The Settlement Support Cultural Broker will facilitate mutual support among the families guided by the needs, strengths and aspiration of these families. This position reports to the Family Support Office Program Manager.

Key Responsibilities:

  •  Conduct one-on-one needs assessment to identify the settlement needs of clients and family members and help families develop strategies to address their needs and how to access resources to have their needs met. 
  • Offer orientation, information and referrals related to clients’ settlement needs.
  • Support clients encountering difficulties with any aspect of adjustment to life in Canada.
  • Provide interpretation and translation services as needed that are relevant to client’s immediate settlement needs.
  • Follow-up on clients’ settlement/integration outcomes.
  • Advocate for the clients in different forums and with different stakeholders.
  • Attend meetings and trainings for staff development.
  • Report, document, and maintain client records/files as needed.
  • Liaise with government and community services to ensure the accuracy of information provided to clients.
  • Assist clients by providing commissioner for oaths services to meet their settlement needs.
  • Provide training and support to volunteers helping out in the front counter
  • Provide mobile outreach and settlement supports to new clients in Southeast/west Edmonton once a week.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Program Manager.


  • Degree/diploma in social sciences, social work or other human services field or an equivalent combination of education and experience from an accredited institution.
  • 2-4 years office work experience with strong telephone manner and leadership skills.
  • Ability to assess client’s needs, identify appropriate services and/or referrals.
  • Knowledge of diverse resources available to the families to access both within the community as well as the formal system.
  • Good oral and written English and Arabic skills. Have a working proficiency of Kurdish will be considered an asset.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office with strong keyboarding skills.
  • Effective communication skills with ability to work in diverse.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and great team player.
  • Proficient in presentation, coordinating, and problem solving skills.

  • Deep insight into the lived experience of vulnerable refugee families
  • Understanding of the diverse culture and religious orientation among the families from refugee regions
  • Openness and commitment to shifting one’s practice from “Broker or worker-led” to “family-driven” whereby support to the family is guided by the unique strengths and needs of the families.
  • Ability to work alongside families and flexibility to work evening and weekends to meet families unique needs and requirements.
  • Capacity to be aware of and manage ones’ own reactions (including emotional triggers) to complex situations of families.
  • Commitment to team work both within this initiative as well as with other key colleagues in the community (settlement & immigrant-serving) sector and formal (health, education and Child & Family services) sectors.


  • Have a valid driver’s license and a car for the work.
  • Requires a police security check and child welfare check.
  • Anticipated Start Date: August 1st, 2018 or until position is filled
  • Contract until March 31st, 2019 with the possibility of extension pending funding.
  • Hours of Work: 1.0 FTE (37.5 hours per week)
