Position Title: Cultural Broker (Syrian Family Support Office)

Hours of Work : Full-time (37.5 hours per week)

Temporary (8 month position) with the possibility of extension

Start date : As soon as possible

Closing date: Thursday, December 13, 2018

Position Summary : Within the broad guidelines of the Settlement Program (SP) funded by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the Cultural Broker will provide holistic one-on-one family support to clients seeking services from MFRS on settlement issues, assess their needs and offer information, and provide referral and advocacy services on behalf of clients. The cultural broker will facilitate mutual support among the families guided by the needs, strengths and aspiration of these families. Also of note, many of our clients require pre- and post-natal support. This position reports to the Syrian Family Support Office Program Coordinator. Please note that the ability to speak and write Arabic is an essential qualification in this position. Data entry and records management is also an essential part of this position.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct one-on-one needs assessment to identify the settlement needs of clients and family members and help families develop strategies to address their needs and how to access resources to have their needs met.

  • Offer orientation, information, and referrals related to clients’ settlement needs.

  • Support clients encountering difficulties with any aspect of adjustment to life in Canada.

  • Provide interpretation and translation services as needed that are relevant to client’s immediate settlement needs.

  • Follow-up on clients’ settlement/integration outcomes.

  • Advocate for the clients in different forums and with different stakeholders.

  • Attend meetings and trainings for staff development.

  • Report, document, and maintain client records/files.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Coordinator.

  • Liaise with government and community services to ensure the accuracy of information provided to clients.

  • Assist clients by providing commissioner for oaths services to meet their settlement needs.

  • Provide training and support to volunteers helping out at the front counter.

  • Document and maintain client records/files as needed.

  • Attend meetings and trainings for staff development.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by Program Manager.

Qualifications:

  • Degree/diploma in social sciences, social work or other human services field or an equivalent combination of education and experience from an accredited institution.

  • 2-4 years of office work experience with strong telephone manner and leadership skills.

  • Ability to assess client’s needs, identify appropriate services and/or referrals.

  • Knowledge of diverse resources available to the families to access both within the community as well as the formal system.

  • Good oral and written English and Arabic skills. A working proficiency of Kurdish will be considered an asset.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office with strong keyboarding skills.

  • Effective communication skills with ability to work in diverse environments.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and a great team player.

  • Proficient in presenting, coordinating, and problem solving skills.

Skills and Personal Qualities needed:

  • Deep insight into the lived experience of vulnerable refugee families.

  • Understanding of the diverse cultures and religious orientations among the families from refugee regions.

  • Openness and commitment to shifting one’s practice from “Broker or worker-led” to “family-driven” whereby support to the family is guided by the unique strengths and needs of the families.

  • Ability to work alongside families and flexibility to work evening and weekends to meet families unique needs and requirements.

  • Capacity to be aware of and manage one’s own reactions (including emotional triggers) to complex situations of families.

  • Commitment to teamwork both within this initiative as well as with other key colleagues in the community (settlement & immigrant-serving) sector and formal (health, education and Child & Family services) sectors.

Other:

  • Have a valid driver’s license and a car for work.

  • Requires a police security check and child welfare check.
